I believe that the Ganga Action Plan was successful in addressing the short-term solution for reducing pollution in the Ganga River. The plan brought about awareness and initiated the initial steps to clean the river. The guidelines for the plan were open for flexibility which is an important factor to adjust practices as new knowledge is attained.
Where the plan lacked in efficiency was the sustainability factor. The plan heavily emphasized the need for a solution but overlooked the interrelated causes of the problem. Pollution of the Ganges River is not caused by one sole component, rather it is the accumulation of social, political, industrial effects of the areas surrounding the river. In order to have long-term effectiveness, there needs to be measures established to address the contamination of the water from daily living activities, an unclear responsibility of state and federal agencies, and monitoring industrial wastes. Overall, the Ganga Action Plan was a good foundation, but it was limited in its overall success.
