The Ganga Action Plan succeeded in my opinion because it was a large, concerted effort at a governmental level, which when considering the grand scale of the Ganga River and the multiple cities and counties affected by this body source and the multiple moving parts and steady communication between multiple parties, is quite impressive. With intensifying and increasing need to contain the worsening status of the Ganges required quick, yet effective management and I believe that the Ganga Action Plan completed this goal successfully. The Ganga Action Plan was just the beginning and at the end of this initial phase for cleaning the Ganga River with research goals in mind such as understanding the sources and nature of the pollution, practical plans for agriculture, animal husbandry fisheries, and forests, population settlement along the river, and revival of the water facilities with tributaries and distributaries. A lot of research came about from the government-back Ganga Action Plan. Although there were lessons to be learned from the plan (i.e. - consistent funding and responsibility at the government level), the plan was a successful first step in the right direction. Hopefully with short-term goals reached, more long-term and sustainable solutions will be in the future for the Ganga River.
