I think it's difficult to make a general blanket statement defining the science of GMOs as "playing God." Genetic mutations are something that happen naturally in nature, and GMOs essentially just accelerate this pathway. GMOs were initially created to develop crops with better pest resistance, better effectiveness, and improved nutritional content. I think it's important to understand that GMOs were created with a helpful purpose, and not just as a simple science experiment. In addition, GMOs do not specifically benefit a certain population. We can all benefit from GMO crops. Farmers can benefit by growing crops more efficiently and providing consumers with a more abundant and affordable food supply. With the world population continuously increasing, GMOS can improve agricultural attempts to increase productivity to match the growing needs of our population. I think that the potential to offend certain religious beliefs by accepting GMOs comes into play when we begin to transition this idea of genetic modifications into more controversial products - such as animal/meat products. Currently, I think our focus on improving global agricultural production is a priority and GMOs are simply a way of making the best use of human innovation and biotechnology.
