Effect of overpopulation on the environment

Overpopulation to the environment means over polluted areas, depletion of natural resources that are essential to sustain life along with lack of healthy soils to work on.
In my belief, government-imposed sanctions limiting development in an area could have good economic effects because even though the population would have limited incomes and land growth, they would make enough of it in order to sustain their families, taking in consideration that the government would distribute the land equally according to the population’s needs.
